Women and Money. What I learned working in a domestic violence center in Oakland
The video showing domestic violence recently has made me reflect on the experiences the women shared with me. Very early in my career I worked as a financial advisor for the employees of a domestic violence center in Oakland. An employee would come out and lead me past the chain link fence, the barbed wired, and all the locks to get into the facility. I would enroll the ladies who worked there up for the retirement plan.
I often needed to wait since they were handling emergencies. I got to speak with the ladies and their children who were living at the center.
What I learned was this: long after the love had ended and the women wanted to leave, the lack of finances kept them, and their children trapped in heartbreaking and life-threatening situations. It is critical for everyone-but especially ladies to have some money set aside for a rainy day. God bless the child that has their own!
